Smart Growth

Do you have any ideas for how the American Institute of Architects' principles for livable communities might be applied in the Waimea planning area? Those principles are: (1) designing compact, pedestrian-friendly communities that allow residents to walk to shops, services, cultural resources and jobs; (2) providing variety in housing, shopping, recreation, transportation and employment; (3) encouraging mixed-use development that integrates different land uses, and varied building types; (4) restoring, revitalizing, and infilling urban centers; (5) giving people the option of walking, biking and using public transit in addition to driving (6) building welcoming and well-defined public places; (7) creating a "sense of place" to give neighborhoods a unique character; (8) balancing development and natural preserves; (9) conserving open space, farms and wildlife habitat and (10) encouraging design excellence. If so, please share them with the committee.
